Windows Could Not Search For New Updates Error Fixed

Microsoft offers timely Windows updates to fix bugs and improve performance.  According to Windows experts, you should keep Windows up-to-date at all times.

Many users have complained of receiving the error “Windows Could Not Search For New Updates”. It usually shows up its ugly face when you try to search and install windows updates.  This problem might be temporary, or there could be some issue with your operating system that needs to be fixed.

We recommend users to fix the error at the earliest.

Ignoring it can cause serious problems with your computer, which is not good.

So, if you are facing this very problem and looking for a solution, this post is for you.

Solution One – Start with Resetting Winsock Catalog

Winsock is a supporting program that handles input/output requests for Internet applications in a Windows operating system.

Since installing Windows updates involves input/output requests, the Winsock catalog plays an important role in the process.

Resetting Winsock catalog means resetting Internet transmission protocols to default.

Here are the steps to follow.

  • Click Start
  • Type cmd in the search bar
  • Right-click cmd  and then select the option shown below

  • In the command prompt window, type the following command and hit Enter

  • Let the command run and then exit command prompt

See if this fixes the error. If not, move to the next solution

Solution Two – Run System File Checker

There is a possibility some system files required by the Windows update process are missing or corrupt which is causing the error. Windows operating system has a System File Checker tool that can repair missing or corrupt system files.

The SFC tool scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy stored in the System32 folder.

Here are the steps to run the SFC tool.

  • Open a command prompt with administrator rights(  Refers to steps given in Solution One)
  • In the command prompt window, type the following command and hit Enter on the keyboard.

  • Let the command run and then exit command prompt

Try updating windows. If you still get “Windows Could Not Search For New Updates”, move to next solution.

Solution Three – Remove the content of SoftwareDistribution folder

On Windows, the “SoftwareDistribution” folder is an important component for Windows Update. It temporarily store files needed to install new windows updates.  The folder is maintained by Windows Update Agent and it should be left alone.

However, there will be times when Datastore and Download folders aren’t synchronized which prevents the operating system from installing new updates. An easy solution to fix the issue is clearing the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Here are the steps to follow.

  • Open a command prompt with administrator rights(  Refer to steps given in solution One)
  • In the command prompt window, type the following command  and hit enter on the keyboard

  • Wait for the command operation to complete
  • Now type net stop bits and hit Enter on the keyboard
  • Minimize command prompt
  • Press Windows logo and E simultaneously to open File Explorer
  • Navigate to this location:
  • Delete all files or folders you see in this folder: SoftwareDistribution
  • Restore command prompt
  • In the command prompt window, type the following command and hit Enter on the keyboard.
  • Wait for the command operation to complete and then type this commandand press Enter on keyboard
  • Close  command prompt window
  • Reboot Windows

Now try searching for Windows updates. Like most users, the “Windows Could Not Search For New Updates” error would be resolved by one of the solutions given in this post.

By Susan C on June 24, 2019

Solution to Standard VGA Graphics Adapter Driver Issue in Windows

If you see an item “Standard VGA Graphics Adapter” in the Display Adapters category of Device Manager, it means the driver for particular graphics card is not installed or corrupt.

Having a “Standard VGA Graphics Adapter” entry under Display Adapters also means your computer is using the built-in graphics driver.

In some cases, you might also see a yellow exclamation mark on the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, which indicates some problem with graphics driver.

One of the disadvantages of “Standard VGA Graphics Adapter” driver is that it can display only basic screen resolutions.

If you want to overcome this limitation, you need to update your graphics card drivers.

Here we have provided steps to update graphics drivers that could fix the issue.

How to Perform Standard VGA Graphics Adapter Update

Step One – Uninstall Standard VGA Graphics Adapter driver

  • Press Windows logo key and R button simultaneously on the keyboard to invoke Run command
  • In the Run command box, type devmgmt.msc and click OK
  • In the Device Manager window, go to Display adapters category and expand it
  • Right-click on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter driver and click Uninstall
  • Wait for the uninstallation process to complete
  • Restart your PC

Step Two- Update graphics drivers

According to Windows experts, unless you install right graphics drivers for the graphics card, Windows OS will continue to use generic graphics drivers that are packaged with the operating system.

There are two ways to update graphics drivers, manually and automatically. Here we have given steps for both methods.

Steps to update graphics driver manually

To update manually, you need to download graphics drivers from right Internet sources.

For example:

  1. Desktop users who do not have discrete graphics card installed in their system need to go to motherboard manufacturer website to download latest graphics driver.
  • Desktop users who have a discrete graphics card like NVIDIA, GeForce or any other graphic cards installed on their system need to go to their respective graphic card manufacturer website to download latest graphics driver.
  • Laptop users need to go their device manufacturer website to download latest graphics driver.

Now here are the steps to follow:

  • Go to the driver provider website and look for latest graphics drivers for your system. While downloading graphics drivers, pay attention to Windows version (7/8/8.1/10) and the bit architecture(32-bit/64-bit)
  • Download right drivers to your desktop and double-click on the setup file to initiate driver installation. If the driver file is in zip format, unzip the contents to a folder and then double-click the executable file to start the installation. Follow on-screen instruction to install graphics driver.
  • Restart your system to let the changes take effect.
  • Now open device manager and check under Display adapters category. You will see the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter entry is replaced by the name/model of the graphics card installed in your system.

With the right graphic drivers installed, you can take advantage of functionalities offered by the graphics card and tune your display setting as per your preferences.

If you find the manual driver update method difficult, you can use a driver update utility to download and install latest graphics driver automatically.

Steps to install graphics drivers automatically

Automatic driver update tools offer many benefits, the most important ones being:

  • You can update device drivers automatically
  • The software scans and updates all outdated or missing drivers at one go
  • The tool picks the right drivers for your device and operating system, so you won’t have to worry about installing an incorrect driver by mistake
  • Automatic driver updates are 100% safe

Driver Updater is one of the best driver update tools out there. Outbyte Driver Updater will give you access to a database of over 1 million drivers. It will regularly scan your PC, suggesting new driver versions to install. Driver Updater contains drivers for a variety of Windows devices. With just one click, you can update drivers in your system.

Solution to how to connect PS4 controller

By Susan C on June 19, 2019

Solution to how to connect PS4 controller

Many users have complained about PS4 controller not connecting to console.

Are you also getting this error?

If yes, this post is for you.

Here we have provided 3 solutions to fix the issue.

Before Anything Else

Before you perform any troubleshooting steps, you need to check certain things.

You need to ensure the PS4 controller and PS4 Console is ON. The light should be white on the PS4 controller.

Also, make sure the PS4 controller is fully charged.

If everything is OK and still the PS4 won’t connect to console, you can follow troubleshooting steps in Solution One.

Solution One- Connect the PS4 controller to console through USB cable

You need to use the USB cable that came with your PS4. The micro-USB port on the PS4 controller is located at the back while the USB port on PS4 console is located at the front of the device.

While the PS4 controller and PS4 console are connected, press the PS button on the controller.

You should hear a small beep and the controller light should change from orange to white. This indicates the start of the pairing process. When the pairing process is completed, the light bar on the PS4 controller turns blue.

If the light bar on the PS4 controller does not turn blue or the PS button is not responsive, you can try these solutions:

  • Try different USB cable
  • Connect the USB cable to a different USB port on the PS4 console. (Note- PS4 has two USB ports)

If you do not achieve success in connecting the PS4 controller to PS4 by the above method, move to the next solution.

Solution Two- Reset PS4 controller

There is a possibility something is wrong with the PS4 controller. Resetting the PS4 controller is a good way to bring PS4 controller to normal working mode.

Here are the steps to reset the PS4 controller.

  • Switch off the PS4 and unplug it from the power source
  • Unplug your router and modem from the power source. This step is necessary as sometimes the PS4 controller connection problems arise due to interference from internet Wi-Fi signals. Unplugging these devices from the power source can help troubleshoot the connection issue more effectively
  • Locate the small reset button at the back of PS4 controller, located near the L2 button.

  • Use a small unfolded paper clip or something similar to push the reset button located inside the tiny hole.
  • Hold the reset button for 3-5 seconds and then release
  • Then reconnect your PS4 controller to PS4 console with the USB cable

If the PS4 controller is not detected after resetting PS4 controller, move to the next solution.

Solution Three – Restart your PS4 console

You cannot ignore the possibility PS4 console’s settings getting corrupt.

Restarting the console can bring the device to normal functioning.

Here are the steps to follow.

  • Turn off the PS4 by pressing the power button and hold it down. Don’t release the power button until you hear a second beep

  • Unplug the PS4 controller from the PS4
  • Unplug the power cable of PS4 from the source and leave it for 2-3 minutes
  • Plug back the power cable of PS4 console to the power socket
  • Plug back the controller to the USB port of PS4 console
  • Press the Power button on PS4 to turn it on
  • Also, turn on the PS4 controller

Many PS4 users were able to resolve the PS4 controller connection issues by following troubleshooting steps given in one of the Solutions in the post.

If none of the solutions has worked for you, try connecting other PS4 controller or you can try connecting your PS4 controller to another PS4 console to check whether where the problem lies — with the PS4 controller or your PS4 console.
