There seems to be a recurring issue with users of Windows 10 showing printer Offline even after they install all required drivers for their Epson printer. If you are one of those experiencing this problem, then you can start troubleshooting this error by first checking the hardware device.

Checking your Epson Printer hardware

  1. Obvious as it may seem, first you need to ensure that the printer is on, most models will have some sort of light to notify you of this
  2. If you are using a wired printer, ensure the printer cable is properly connected to the computer. You should check the connections at both ends to ensure they are firmly seated and check the cable itself for any obvious damage
  3. If you are using a wireless printer, ensure it is connected to the network. You can check the wireless connection of your Epson printer by running the printer’s wireless connectivity test. Follow the steps below to get the printer status/connection report
  4. Enter Setup Mode
  5. Select Network Settings
  6. Select Confirm Network Settings
  7. Confirm the connection status
  8. Take a note of the IP address of the printer (which means it is connected)
  9. If you want to print the status report, press Start. Your Epson printer will now print the Printer status page

Now that you have confirmed your printer connection, you need to check if you have installed updated printer software. To check your printer software follow the troubleshooting steps set out below:

Steps 1 – Disable the security software

  1. Look for an antivirus icon in the Windows notification area
  2. Right-click on the icon and check for options such as Stop, Disable or something similar
  3. If you don’t find any such option, open the antivirus program and look for the option to disable or stop the security software

Step 2 – Make the Epson printer your default printer

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click Devices and Printers
  4. right-click Epson printer in the list
  5. Click Set as default printer

Step 3 – Install Windows Update KB3147458

Microsoft has released an update to resolve printer problems faced by users. This particular update prevents many wireless printers from going offline. Check your computer to see if it has the KB3147458 update installed by following steps set out below:

  1. Go to desktop and type windows update in the search box
  2. Click on search for an update in the list
  3. In the Update & Security window, select Windows update and click on Advanced option
  4. In the Advanced options window, select view your update history
  5. You will now see the updates installed, look for KB3147458 in the list
  6. If you don’t find KB3147458 in the list, go to Microsoft.com and search for Windows Update KB3147458, download and install it. Restart your computer after installing the update and see if the issue persists
  7. If the KB3147458 update is installed, uninstall and reinstall your Epson printer again.

Step 1- Check the ink level of black ink cartridge

Most HP printers have LCD touchscreen panels that allow you to check ink levels. Use the control panel to navigate to the option “Ink Levels”. The steps to check ink level might differ with each model so check the documentation supplied with the printer first.

Step 2 – Remove the plastic tape on the new cartridge

Often users install a new black ink cartridge but forget to remove the protective plastic tape. This is a pretty easy mistake to make so do double-check! Remove the black ink cartridge and peel off the protective tape.

If you are using an old print cartridge, follow the troubleshooting steps given below.

Step 4- Clean the cartridge

You can try cleaning the ink cartridge by using a cotton swab to wipe away any dirt or dried ink from the print header. Also, clean the printer heads.

Step 5 – Perform Print Cartridge Alignment

You need to always remember to run “Self-Test Diagnostic” and “Print Cartridge Alignment” to resolve the issue of black ink not printing. If you get an error message saying “Print cartridge alignment failed”, you need to follow the troubleshooting steps for Print Cartridge alignment.

  1. Load the correct type of paper, you can use A4 size paper
  2. Press Setup button on control panel of printer
  3. Press Down arrow to select Tools and press OK
  4. Press Down arrow again to select Align Print Cartridges, and press OK
  5. Your printer will calibrate, align the print head and print an alignment page

Step 6- Run Diagnostic software

If none of the above troubleshooting steps help, you need to download and run the “HP Print and Scan Doctor” software provided by the company. Here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Install the HP Print and Scan Doctor software by following on-screen instructions
  2. Open HP Print and Scan Doctor and click Start on the Welcome screen
  3. Select your Printer from the list and click Next
  4. On the next screen, select Fix Printing
  5. The software will try to diagnose and fix the printer issue
