Beware of Unsolicited emails with a link

By Sushant Mehta on February 12, 2013

Be careful when an unsolicited email with a link shows up in your email inbox. You must check whether the link takes you to the website that it claims it will take you. If you are careless about it, you could become the latest victim of an identity theft.

Phishing scammers repeatedly use this modus operandi to fool the unsuspecting. They send emails containing a link to numerous email addresses. The link would claim to take users to a log-in website such as Google Docs where users must feed in their personal information. But in reality the linked website would be a phishing site masquerading as a genuine website. Once scammers have your personal email ID and password, they will access your email account and steal any personal information, such as your bank account details, contained in it.

How can you prevent yourself from falling victim to phishing scams?

When you click the embedded link in unsolicited emails, always check the URL of the webpage you are directed to. If the directed page is supposed to be Google Docs, the URL will show that. If the URL address is something else, do not fill in any information. Instead, close the page immediately.

To prevent yourself from malware and spyware programs, it is also necessary that you install an advanced antivirus software Program and run regular virus scans.

By Sushant Mehta on February 11, 2013

One of the following error messages is received when msvcp71.dll missing or not found error occurs:

  • “Cannot start [APPLICATION]. A required component is missing: msvcp71.dll. Please install [APPLICATION] again.”
  • “Msvcp71.dll Not Found”
  • “The file msvcp71.dll is missing.”
  • “Cannot find msvcp71.dll”
  • “This application failed to start because msvcp71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”

The problem usually occurs when you try to launch a particular application or program. That said, it can also appear at other times, such as at Windows startup.

Resolution

DLL errors, such as msvcp71.dll, can occur due to various reasons. However, most dll errors can be fixed through these steps:

  • Reinstall the application with which you are getting the error

In case the error occurs only when you try to launch a particular application, uninstall that application and reinstall it.

  • Run a registry scan

DLL errors often occur due to registry-related issues. Therefore, clean your registry using an advanced registry cleaning software Tool.

  • Download, install, and register msvcp71.dll from a reliable free online dll directory

If the above steps fail, you would need to download a msvcp71.dll, save it in your C:/Windows/System 32 folder, and register it by running the following command in the command prompt: regserv32 msvcp71.dll.

How to stop automatic installation of updates in Windows 8

By Sushant Mehta on February 10, 2013

Windows 8 is a huge improvement over Windows 7. With that said, some things were better in the older version, such as an option for delaying installation of updates.

Disappointingly, no such feature is present in Windows 8. In the new operating system, although users are informed about the upcoming updates in advance, they cannot delay the installation with the default update settings switched on. This can be annoying, especially when you are in middle of something important.

To turn off automatic updates, perform these steps:

  1. Open the Charms Bar, and then click Settings
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Browse to System and Security, and then select ‘turn off automatic updating on or off”
  4. Select “Download updates but let me choose whether to install them” from the drop-down menu below Important Updates
  5. Click OK to save the changes

This will turn off the automatic updating of Windows updates in Windows 8.

While errors caused by registry-related issues have reduced in the newer Windows versions, they have not completely stopped. What was true for the older versions remains good for newer versions as well: maintaining a clean and compact registry is the best and surest way of preventing registry errors. And how can you maintain a clean and compact registry? Simple, run registry scans regularly using a robust registry maintenance software tool.
