Runtime error 217 Fix

By Sushant Mehta on February 20, 2013

Windows users who use Norton Antivirus sometimes experience the following error when they click Internet Explorer 7 (IE7):

“The unknown exception software exception (oxoeedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x7c812a5b.”

Upon closing the error box, the below-mentioned error message appears on the screen:

“runtime error 217 0298f48e”

Cause

It is seen that this error occurs only when a particular add-0n, Norton confidential helper, is turned on.

Solution

Disabling the Norton confidential helper add-on fixes the problem. To do so, perform the steps below:

  1. Open IE
  2. Click Tools
  3. Click Internet Options
  4. Click Programs in the Internet dialog box
  5. Click Manage add-ons
  6. Browse through the list and select the Norton Confidential helper add-on
  7. Click the Disable button
  8. Launch IE again

If you are also experiencing some other issues with Norton Antivirus, or if its performance below-par, you should consider installing a different antivirus tool. To keep your system protected against viruses and other malware, it is necessary that you do the following:

  • Keep your antivirus up-to-date
  • Perform regular virus scans
  • Scan downloaded files and applications before running them

Security issue in iPhone5

By Sushant Mehta on February 18, 2013

An iOS 6.1 hack was published online recently. With this hack, iPhone 5’s pin code can be bypassed, allowing an unauthorized person access to voice mails, contacts, photos, text messages, and other stored data. Apple has acknowledged this issue. It has also promised a fix soon. However, this instance has proved, yet again, that Apple products are not so secure.

If you use iPhone5, it is best that you take care to not let it come into the hands of unknown people, at least not until Apple releases the promised fix.
