5 steps to a clean PC!

By Sushant Mehta on November 4, 2014

Clean PC – Efficient PC

Proper maintenance of any device will help extend its lifespan and also maintain a good level of efficiency. This rule applies equally to your personal computer and you should periodically take steps to clean your PC to keep it in optimum working order. In this article, we outline 5 quick steps to clean your PC.

1. Cleaning the hardware

Over time, dust gets collected on the system components inside your computer. dust can accumulate in vents and fans and prevent efficient cooling, thereby leading to overheating of the system components and reducing their life span. Clean the exhaust fans of your computer and also blow off the dust accumulated on motherboard and other parts by using a compressed air cleaner.

2. Remove spyware and adware

Spyware and Adware Programs can slow down your PC and reduce its efficiency. These programs spawn several processes which hog system resources. Also, these programs try to transmit information over the Internet which can be harmful. Some Spyware programs are tough to remove as they do not show up in the Add/Remove programs tool in Windows. You could download and install a good Spyware and Adware removal tool to get rid of these nasty programs.

Top 5 ways to speed up your PC

3. Uninstalling unnecessary programs

Many times we install programs for a specific task and forget to uninstall these programs after completing the task. Almost every program runs a background process that utilizes system resources.  The processes Tab in the Task Manager will give you an idea about different application processes and the system resources they use. Uninstalling unnecessary programs will free up valuable hard drive space and system resources and also reduce the burden on your system.

4. Perform Maintenance tasks

Over time as you use your computer;  several files and unnecessary data entries are created. For example, when you surf the Internet, the website you visit stores cookies and Internet files on your computer for later use. These internet files and cookies occupy space on your C drive and a large amount of such files (even the most moderate surfer can accumulate a substantial amount) can considerably burden your system. You should periodically delete cookies and temporary internet files from your computer to make your system more efficient.

5. Defrag your hard drive

Fragmentation is a common problem in Windows that becomes more severe over time. The data in your hard drive is stored in small clusters. When there is large amount of space in your HDD, Windows operating system stores data in contiguous clusters. When there is less space on drive, it stores data wherever it finds free clusters. When the data is heavily fragmented, the read and write heads of the HDD have to work extra hard to find data scattered in different places on the drive. Defragging the hard drive ensures the data is arranged in contiguous clusters and the access time is greatly reduced. Windows has in-built defrag tool. If you are not happy with its performance, you also have several free and premium defrag tools that can defrag your hard drive and optimize it for performance. The Speedy PC Pro tool above would prove very useful in this respect.

Sort out your digital photo library in 5 easy steps

By Sushant Mehta on October 31, 2014

In today’s age of visual culture, the camera has become an indispensable part of everyone’s life. The inclusion of a camera in modern communication devices such as Smartphones has led to a massive increase in photo creation. In most cases, the digital photo library lacks any structure, making it difficult to find the exact picture you have taken on a particular event. The solution to this problem is sorting your digital photo library. Below are some quick tips on how go about this:

1. Setting your camera to the correct date and time

Modern cameras are capable of tagging photos with the correct date and time. This feature can be very useful to enable you to search and chronologically arrange your pictures in separate folders.

2. Deleting junk images

You should make a habit of deleting junk images and store only favourite pictures, it is best to do this as soon as you take the pictures. This way you can free valuable hard drive space and also remove clutter.  It will also reduce the cost of taking backups of your digital photo library on optical media. The best way to get rid of junk images is deleting them in the camera itself before importing any batch of images to the computer.

3. Using sub-folders

Don’t import and dump all images from your camera into one folder on your computer. Make a habit of creating sub-folders and then importing the pictures from your camera into these folders. A common method of storing images is creating folders for every year such as 2012, 2013, 2014. In these folders, you can create more sub-folders and names them as per event such as Christy’s marriage, Alan’s Birthday, Wedding Anniversary and so on. Also, do not save images to the My Pictures in Windows as its default location is C drive. In case, your C drive is corrupted, becomes inaccessible or you have to reinstall Windows OS, you will lose your all images stored in My Pictures folder located on C drive.

4. Using image management software to tag photos

Using image management software is the best way to organize and access your digital image library. One of the advantages of using image management software is you are not required to independently go to the folder to view a particular image. The image management software scans all directories that you specify and arranges images as per tags or folders. Besides image management software like Picasa has several image management tools that allow you to tweak pictures. Picasa also allows you to store/backup images online. When you use image management software like Picasa, your entire digital photo library is accessible through one user interface.

5. Taking regular backups of your digital image library

External drives have become less expensive and you can store a backup of your entire digital photo library on a portable HDD. Besides, there are several online photo sites that allow you to store images online. However, think about privacy and security factors before uploading photos onto any online photo website.

There are many more solutions to sorting, naming and backing up your digital photo library, many of these will be delved into in more detail in later articles. However, the tips above are a good starting point for getting your libraries in some sort of order.

Top 3 Registry Tweaks To Improve Windows performance

By Sushant Mehta on October 19, 2014

Registry is the location in a Windows system that contains all settings for applications, user interface and the Windows Operating System. The information about every setting is stored in what is called a ‘Registry Key’. You can boost the performance of your Windows system by modifying or deleting unnecessary Registry Keys.

To be on safe side, you should take a Registry backup which can be used restore the Registry to its previous state in case you delete a wrong value. Let’s take a look at top 3 Registry tweaks that can improve Windows performance.

Registry Errors: Causes and Solution
  1. Speeding up Windows 7 taskbar

The Taskbar can be a very useful feature in Windows. When you move your Mouse over the Taskbar, the thumbnails of applications can take a while to load. You can reduce this delay by a simple Registry tweak.

  1. Click on Start button
  2. Type “regedit” in the search box on the Start menu
  3. Hit Enter
  4. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced
  5. Right click to create a DWORD
  6. Name it “ExtendedUIHoverTime”
  7. Double-click on “ExtendedUIHoverTime” and give it a Decimal value of “1”.
  8. Click Ok to exit Registry
  9. Restart your computer
  10. Hiding Homegroups in Windows Explorer’s Sidebar

The default location such as Homegroups which appear in Windows Explorer’s Sidebar is seldom used. Removing such default entries can clear up clutter and simplify navigation.  A small Registry edit can hide these default entries that show in the Windows Explorer Sidebar.

  4. Under Full control, check the box “Allow”

If you have installed many programs in your Windows system, the “open with” menu becomes cluttered with many entries. Most of the time, you will notice there are unwanted program entries which are not used. In such cases, you can remove the unwanted program entries from the “Open with” menu by a simple Registry edit.

  1. Click on Start button
  2. Type “regedit” in the search box in the Start menu
  3. Hit Enter
  4. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer FileExts
  5. Here, you will see different file extensions registered on your Windows system
  6. Go to the file extension you want to edit and click the white triangle to view sub folders
  7. Select OpenWithList. Note the programs in the right pane
  8. Right-click the value which you don’t want to see in the “openwith” menu
