By Sushant Mehta on February 8, 2016

How to fix WiFi issues in Windows 10?

Many Windows 10 users have reported problems with WiFi after upgrading to Windows 10, the most common problems are set out below:

  • No internet connection after upgrading to Windows 10
  • WiFi button on Windows 10 not working
  • No WiFi settings or an option to sign in to WiFi network
  • No WiFi adapter found
  • WiFi not working on Windows 10, 64-bit system

If you are experiencing one of the WiFi problems listed above or any other WiFi problem, the solution  below might help resolve the issue.

Reason for WiFi problem

Your Windows 10 WiFi problem might be triggered by unsupported VPN software installed on your PC. If you have an old VPN client like Sonic Global Client or Cisco VPN client, then it is likely your WiFi problem is caused by this piece of software.

Microsoft has also stated that if you have old VPN software installed on your Windows 8.1 system, which was also present in your system during the Windows 10 upgrade, then problems are likely to occur. This happens because the older version of software has Filter Drivers that are not upgraded properly when you migrate to Windows 10, leading to WiFi problems.

Solution to WiFi problems in Windows 10

  1. Right click on Start Menu
  2. Select Command Prompt(Admin) from the drop-down menu
  3. Type the following command and hit the Enter key

reg delete HKCRCLSID{988248f3-a1ad-49bf-9170-676cbbc36ba3} /va /f

  1. Enter the command given below at the Command prompt and hit Enter

netcfg -v -u dni_dne

  1. Restart your PC

After taking the above actions, you should find the WiFi settings are now available and you can connect to your required WiFi network. If this solution does not solve the Windows 10 WiFi issue, you need to use the Compatibility mode to resolve WiFi Driver problems.

  1. Go to the folder where the WiFi Driver setup file is located
  2. Right-click on setup file and select Troubleshoot compatibility
  3. This will start the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter wizard that will check for the issues
  4. In the dialog box, select Troubleshoot program
  5. Depending on the problem you are facing, select the options that apply to your problem. For example, if the WiFi Drivers worked well on Windows 8, you need to tick the option “The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won’t install or run now’”
  6. Click Next
  7. Select Windows 8. (You have upgraded from Windows 8 and WiFi drivers worked well in that version of Windows.)
  8. Click Next
  9. Click Test the program
  10. Follow the on-screen instructions and in most cases the WiFi problem will be resolved
  11. If the program is successful, Click the option “Yes, save these settings for this program” at the end of the program
  12. Click Close

iPad Pro- Will it replace the laptop?

By Sushant Mehta on February 5, 2016

Ahead of the iPad Pro launch in November 2015, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple asked, “Why would anyone buy a PC anymore?” The company suggests their iPad Pro might be a replacement to the laptop.

Let’s compare the iPad Pro with a laptop to see how true this may be.

iPad Pro versus Laptop – Productivity

One of the main selling points of a laptop is its portability, but tablets are far more portable than laptops. The second main selling point of a laptop is productivity. Laptops have bigger screens, touchpads and keypads, making it easier for you to run and work with applications such as Word, Excel, graphics packages and PowerPoint.

The iPad Pro is a touchscreen device. It offers you a different type of input tool – Pencil, a stylus. The screen of the iPad Pro is pressure sensitive which is ideal for those whose work involves writing, sketching or annotating, the iPad Pro is a great device for artists.

If you prefer typing on a physical keyboard, the iPad Pro allows you to attach a Smart Keyboard which connects to the iPad Pro without needing Bluetooth. The keyboard is few millimeters thick and your iPad Pro stands at an angle when docked to this keyboard. The only drawback in this arrangement is the iPad Pro screen is at a fixed position so you will be unable to tilt the screen.

iPad Pro versus Laptop – Battery life

The battery life of many laptops is only few hours long whereas the iPad Pro is likely to give you enough power to last a full day. Obviously, the battery life depends on several factors such as screen brightness and the apps you are using. However in most cases, the iPad Pro would be more power efficient than a laptop.

iPad Pro versus Laptop – Screen

The iPad Pro has a 12.9 inch screen that is comparatively smaller than mainstream laptops that either have a 14-inch or 15-inch screen. However, the iPad Pro screen offers good working area and you would be able to do most work very comfortably on this screen size. The iPad Pro offers a screen resolution of 2732×2048 pixels, which is higher than that available in most laptops.

iPad Pro versus Laptop – Storage

Laptops offer you good storage options such as 500 GB or even up to 1TB. In addition, you can always connect external drives if you want additional storage space. Apple is offering 2 storage options in the iPad Pro – 32GB and 128 GB.

iPad Pro versus Laptop – the Verdict

The iPad Pro is ideal for artists and serves well for other purposes also such as browsing, editing and sharing pictures, watching movies or TV programs. However, the device may not be ideal for everyone who wants a portable device for doing document/ spreadsheet or other work. The laptop still holds strong when you need a business tool with strong backup options.

How to keep your Android phone safe from the new Android malware

By Sushant Mehta on January 26, 2016

The growth in popularity of the Android platform makes it more of a target for those wanting to exploit users by installing malware on their devices. This article goes through how to remove Android malware and how to stop any re-infection once you have got rid of the offending program.

Growing number of auto rooting adware a big concern for Android users

You may think adware is not such a major threat and does little more than display advertisements on your mobile phone. The truth is adware also installs tracking software on your mobile phone. Having adware on your mobile phone is like having a “Live server” sitting inside your Android phone, which sends information about you and your surfing habits to a remote location.

The reason this new android malware is so dangerous is because it roots the device automatically after the user installs it. It embeds itself as a system application and then it becomes impossible for the user to remove it. Even a factory reset won’t help and there is nothing you can do. The only way to remove the Auto rooting Adware is flashing your Android phone with original ROM. This can only be done at authorized service centers.

Names of android malware and how they work

Shedun, Shuanet and Shiftybugs are three common adware programs which are known to contain malicious code. There are several variants of these adware programs, with the variations having 71 percent to 82 percent of same code as the three aforementioned programs.  In order to root your device, the adware app uses publicly available exploits that perform the rooting function. The exploits used by these Adware programs are

  • Framaroot
  • Memexploit
  • ExynosAbuse

Keep your Android phone safe from auto rooting Adware

If you are only downloading and installing apps from the Google Play store, you are most likely safe from this auto rooting Adware. These types of Adware programs generally get installed when you visit third party app stores. These corrupted apps take advantage of existing security vulnerabilities. So as long as there are ways to root your device, there will always be the risk of corrupted apps rooting your device automatically. The best way to stay safe is be extra cautious when you download apps from other sources.

According to Lookout technology and security researchers, there are more than 20,000 repackaged apps that have the new Android Malware hidden or embedded with them. This new Android Malware might be posing as one of your favorite apps in a third party app store.
