Questions you must ask before saying yes to cloud storage

By Sushant Mehta on October 15, 2013

Cloud storage is useful to personal users, but the service is primarily geared towards small- and medium-sized companies. Beneficial as such a service is to business owners, you must ask the following questions before using the cloud.

What kind of data I would store in the cloud?

For business owners, the greatest attraction of a cloud storage service is the money it helps save. Yes, cloud storage reduces your operational costs, but it is not the only thing you should be concerned with.

The first thing to consider is the kind of data you would be storing. Some businesses like financial and medical companies may get into legal troubles if they store their customers’ data in the cloud. So check the government rules and regulations that apply to your business before opting for this service.

How will data be transferred to the cloud?

The best cloud storage providers transfer their clients’ data in encrypted form. This is the safest way to transfer data over the Internet, and you should only hire a provider if it provides this facility.

How good is the provider’s track record?

A company’s past performance gives you a fair idea about how good or bad your experience with it will be. When checking and evaluating a provider’s track record, study its performance on the following parameters:

Downtime – Some downtime is acceptable, but your operations can get badly affected if your provider’s services go down once every few days. Give preference to a provider with a better downtime history.

Customer Support – How does a provider offer customer support? How quick it is to respond to its customers’ queries? These are a few questions which you must try to get answers to in order to ensure you do not regret your decision a few months down the line. Information regarding this can be found on the provider’s website as well as by asking the online community for feedback about the provider.

Flexibility – Does the provider’s cloud support all applications used by you? How scalable is the cloud solution? Get answers to these important questions before signing a contract.

Pricing structure – Some providers offer only fixed plans, while some others offer customized pricing plans. Which type of pricing plan best suits you? Decide this first and then select a provider that offers you what you need.

Which part of the cloud the provider outsources?

The security risk is greater when important aspects of the cloud are outsourced. Browse the selected provider’s security and outsourcing policy to check which parts of the cloud it outsources.

Say yes to a provider only after you are satisfied with its security policy, range of services provided, and pricing structure. The responsibility of keeping data in the cloud safe lies primarily with the provider, just like keeping data safe in your network is solely your responsibility. To prevent malware from entering your network, install a robust firewall and an advanced antivirus tool on every office computer.

How to disable mdm.exe virus

By Sushant Mehta on September 26, 2013

The original mdm.exe is a genuine process. However, it is not uncommon for malware to have the same name as a genuine process file. If you find that mdm.exe is not located in its usual location or there are two entries by the name mdm.exe under the Processes tab in the Windows Task Manager window, you can be almost certain that your computer is infected.

How to check if mdm.exe running is safe

Check the location of the file first. The genuine mdm.exe is located in the folder C:WindowsSystem 32. An mdm.exe located in some other location is a cause for concern. You should immediately run a virus scan to ensure that your computer is not infected or to remove present malware and secure the computer once again.

The other thing you can do is open Task Manager and check how many mdm.exe are running. If more than one is running, you may well be looking at a malware-related issue.

To open the Task Manager window, perform the following steps:

  • Click Ctrl+Alt+Del
  • Click the Processes tab
  • Browse through the listed entries to check how many mdm.exe are running

Malicious programs that are known to disguise themselves as mdm.exe

The following malware is known to hide itself as mdm.exe:

  • W32. Unubot.B
  • W32.Sdbot.APE
  • W32. Rbot.AIJ
  • W32.Agobot.AQ
  • W32.Bckdr-QJR

What to do when your computer is infected with malware disguised as mdm.exe

If your desktop is infected, perform the following steps in the same order they appear here.

Update your antivirus tool – Open your antivirus tool’s interface and click on the Update button to update it with the latest virus definitions and signature. If up till now you haven’t used an antivirus application, download and install one immediately. When purchasing a new antivirus tool, be mindful about the following things: (1) ensure that the tool is compatible with your Windows operating system, (2) it provides real-time protection, (3) it doesn’t consume too much resources, (4) it is fast. Update your new antivirus tool once the installation is complete.

Disconnect your computer from the Internet – Next disconnect your Windows computer from any network that it is connected to.

Reboot Windows in the Safe Mode – Close all open applications and programs and restart Windows. Next press and hold the F8 key as your computer boots to enter into the Advanced Boot Menu. Here, using the arrow keys on your keyboard, select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Run a full system scan – Finally run a full system scan to get rid of the malicious mdm.exe and other malware files.

What is Windows 8.1 Preview

By Sushant Mehta on September 23, 2013

The pre release versions of Windows 8.1 are referred to as Windows RT 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Preview. These versions are built on the existing platform of Windows 8, and have been enhanced in terms of cloud connectivity, apps, search features, and personalization.

Let’s address here a few common questions related to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Preview.

Can I install Windows 8.1 Preview on my computer?

You should try and install Windows 8.1 Preview or RT version on your computer only when:

  • You are an experienced Windows user
  • You know how to troubleshoot PC issues and can format a hard disk and reinstall a new operating system from scratch
  • You can create full system backups and know how to create Windows operating system recovery disks

Is it risky to install the Preview versions?

In short – yes. The final release versions are thoroughly tested before they are released in the market. However, preview versions are not the final product. There might still be some errors in the preview operating system that can cause issues like:

  • Damage some of your files
  • Create difficulties when you connect to a network
  • Frequent system crashes
  • Generate hardware-related errors

What is the minimum system requirement for Windows 8.1 Preview?

The minimum hardware requirements are same as Windows 8:

RAM: 1 GB for 32 bit and 3 GB for 64 bit

Hard disk free space: 16 GB for 32 bit and 20 GB for 64 bit

CPU: 1 Ghz or better

Graphics: DitectX9 graphics card comprising WDDM driver

Display: If you want to use touch feature, the monitor of your computer should support multitouch

What will happen to my existing programs and devices when I install Windows 8.1 Preview?

Most of the times your programs and devices should continue to work after you install Windows 8.1 Preview on your computer. However, at times, you may have to first uninstall and then reinstall a few programs and drivers. You may also have to update some of your device drivers. This is something you can do automatically using an advanced driver update tool.

What will happen to my files, setting and applications when I install Windows 8.1 Preview?

What happens to your files etc. after upgrading depends solely on the version of Windows you upgrade from. The list below will give you more accurate information.

If you are upgrading your operating system from:

  • Windows 8, your personal files, most applications and Windows settings will stay intact
  • Windows 7, only your personal files will stay intact and rest of the data will be lost
  • Windows Vista and Windows XP, you will save nothing. This is because you will have to boot your system using the installation disc and perform a clean install

Whichever version you are upgrading from, it is always better to backup your data on an external storage device before proceeding with the upgrade.

These were just some of the common questions related to Windows 8.1 Preview. You can find more details in the Windows Knowledgebase website.
