Top tips to personalize Firefox

By Sushant Mehta on February 12, 2014

How do I customize Firefox?

Did you know that Firefox can be customized in many ways even when you don’t use add-ons?

A highly customizable web browser, Firefox can be manually customized and modifying default settings this way is not difficult at all and can be done through a single command. “about:config” command is your free pass to a personalized browsing experience. Here are a few about:config tweaks that help improve your browsing experience.

Note: To see, access, and change default settings, type about:config in the browser’s address bar and then hit Enter. All current settings will be displayed in an alphabetical order. You can narrow down the configuration preferences to only those you need by typing a search item in the Filter bar.

Customize the tab start tab page

By default, whenever you click a new tab Firefox displays thumbnails of nine websites that it feels are most important to you. Firefox, like other web browsers, creates this list by looking at your browsing history.

If you wish, you can customize this list manually. But what if you want a tab start page that is completely different? To achieve this, locate browser.newtab.url, click it twice, and type the address of the website you require.

Open search results in a new tab

If you want to open a new search launched from the Search tool bar in a new tab, search for browser.search.openintab and set it to “true”.

Enable pipelining

Pipelining is best described as multi-threaded surfing. It involves sending of multiple requests simultaneously to a server in place of the default method in which only one request is relayed at a time.

Firefox supports this method, which can help websites load faster in some cases. To enable it, search for network.http.pipelining.ssl, network.http.proxy.pipelining, and network.http.pipelining and set all of them to “true”.

Ease up the load on your RAM when Firefox is minimized

Firefox offers many great features, but being light on memory is hardly its strong point. Even when minimized, Firefox can eat away a good portion of your memory.

If you find other applications running at a snails pace even when you have Firefox minimized, forcing Firefox to transfer some of its load on RAM to the hard drive is an option you should consider. By doing this you can free up some precious memory space and help other applications run faster. To do so, you will need to create a new entry in the about:config databank. Right-click at any part of the list and then click “New”. Next, select “Boolean” and give the new entry name config.trim_on_minimize. Lastly, feed its value as “true”.

In many ways, Firefox manages its settings the same way as Windows registry. Vitally important to the smooth functioning of a Windows computer, registry can every now and then develop issues. These issues, while easy to take care of if you have a good registry cleaner, can cause serious problems when not addressed. That is why we recommend you regularly scan your registry with an advanced registry cleaning tool.

Review of Linksys RE1000

By Sushant Mehta on February 4, 2014

The Linksys RE1000 is the new WiFi extender introduced by the company. So, how good it is? Read on to find out more about this product.

Design

The design is simple, somewhat understated. But this is not surprising at all. Manufacturers of utility products, which Linksys RE1000 indubitably is, often give more attention to other important aspects such as usability and configuration. Linksys, too, has done exactly the same.

Installation

The installation process is ridiculously simple. If you use a router that includes WiFi Protected Setup, all you need to do is press the embedded WPS button on both of your devices—router and Linksys RE1000.

Those of you who use a standard 11n network that has WPA2 security will need to perform the following steps:

  1. Plug in the Linksys RE1000
  2. Insert the setup CD
  3. Enter the network password

Range

In our test, we were impressed by its range. With this Wi-Fi extender, we observed, the data rates did not fall considerably when we moved 8-10 meters away from the router with considerable obstruction in between.

To conclude, Linksys RE1000 is a useful Wi-Fi extender. It helps you stay connected to the Internet even when you are a few meters away from the router. Needless to say, if you use the Internet, you must protect yourself against malware attack. Install a reliable antivirus tool and surf without any tension.

Solution to avgrsx.exe high CPU issue

By Sushant Mehta on February 4, 2014

The avgrsx.exe file belongs to the AVG antivirus program. It is an important part of this software, however often it is seen consuming too much resource. Users often complain that the process slows the boot process, opening of large files, and their computer at random times. Here we look in brief at what this process does and how you can solve the said issues.

PC Speed Help: How to fix high CPU usage

Purpose of avgrsx.exe

Avgrsx.exe belongs to the Resident Shield component of the AVG protective software. It is responsible for protecting a computer against malware in real-time.

The process scans files when you open, move, copy, or save them. In case it detects a threat, it will cause a pop-up alert window to appear on the desktop asking you about the action you want to take against the infected file(s). The pop-up alert window only appears when you have not configured the AVG protection tool to take a predefined action every time a threat is detected.

By default, this process is set to run every time you power on your computer.

Issue 1 – Avgrsx.exe slows Windows startup

Removing avgrsx.exe from the Startup menu will solve the issue. However, the problem is that if you do this, your AVG antivirus tool will no longer scan files as Windows starts.

To reduce a process from the Startup menu perform these steps:

  • Click the Windows icon in the taskbar
  • Type msconfig in the Start Search bar and then press Enter
  • Click the Startup tab in the System Configuration dialog box
  • Deselect the item you don’t want to load automatically along with Windows

Issue 2 – Avgrsx.exe causes large files to open slowly

As mentioned previously, the process scans files for threats when you open them. Larger a file is the more time avgrsx.exe will take to scan it and slower the file will open. A workaround to this issue is to prevent this process from scanning certain large file that you use often.

Issue 3 – Avgrsx.exe consume too much CPU resource

By design, this process requires a lot of resource to function properly. So there is not much you can do about this issue if you want to continue using the AVG protective software. You cannot terminate or permanently disable the process because that will make your computer vulnerable to malware attacks.

The only permanent solution to the three issues mentioned above is to replace the AVG protective tool with another reliable, yet light, antivirus software. There are tools that offer you the same level of protection, may be even better, that AVG antivirus program provides without negatively affecting your computer’s speed. Then why not get yourself a new reliable, light antivirus software application and end performance-related issues once and for all?
