Best CPUs for Gaming in 2026

By lisak on February 18, 2026

Below we provide a guide to the best CPUs for gaming in 2026, covering top picks, what to look for, and why they matter. So whether you are building a high-end rig, a mid-range system, or a budget gaming PC, this post will help.

Best CPUs for Gaming in 2026

How to choose the right processor to get the most out of your games and GPU

A CPU (Central Processing Unit) is one of the most critical components of a gaming PC — it drives game logic, AI, physics calculations, and helps your GPU render frames smoothly. In 2026, both AMD and Intel produce excellent processors, and choosing the right one depends on your budget, resolution, and gaming goals.

Top Gaming CPUs This Year

Best Overall Gaming CPU — AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D stands out as the best all-around processor for gaming in 2026. Its huge 3D V-Cache design boosts frame rates in CPU-sensitive titles like competitive shooters and open-world games, while keeping power use lower than many rivals.

Why it’s great:

  • Excellent performance at 1080p and 1440p
  • Ideal for pairing with high-end GPUs
  • Efficient and cool compared to many high-end chips

Note: AMD also released an updated version, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, offering slightly higher clocks and performance gains — but the original 9800X3D remains the best value for pure gaming.

Best High-End Performance — AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D

For gamers who also do streaming or content creation with gaming, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D brings 16 cores and 3D V-Cache performance together. It matches or even beats other flagship chips in demanding multitasking while still dominating in games.

Pros:

  • Great for gaming + productivity
  • Top-tier performance in heavily threaded workloads

Best CPUs by Category

Mid-Range & Value Picks

  • If you want strong gaming performance without spending a fortune:
  • AMD Ryzen 5 9600X – Excellent fps for 1080p/1440p gaming on a sensible budget.
  • AMD Ryzen 7 9700X – Slightly more cores and multitasking headroom, great all-rounder.

These are ideal for most gamers unless you need the absolute highest frame rates.

Budget & Entry-Level CPUs

If you’re on a strict budget:

  • Midrange Ryzen 5 7600X or Intel Core i5 alternatives can still drive playable frame rates.
  • Modern games are increasingly demanding, but even lower-end CPUs with 6+ cores at higher clock speeds can handle many titles smoothly, especially when paired with a capable GPU.

What To Look For in a Gaming CPU

To choose the right chip, consider:

1. Core Count & Threads
Most modern games benefit from 6–8 cores, with additional threads helping multitasking (e.g., streaming while gaming).
2. Clock Speeds (GHz)
Higher clock speeds help games that depend on fast single-core performance, such as competitive or esports titles.
3. Cache & Architecture
Tech like 3D V-Cache dramatically helps gaming performance by increasing available high-speed cache.
4. Future-proofing
If you plan to hold onto your system for several years, choosing a recent architecture with platform upgrade paths (like AM5 or latest Intel sockets) can extend longevity.

Intel vs AMD: Who Wins?

Both companies offer strong gaming CPUs:

AMD’s 3D V-Cache CPUs currently dominate pure gaming performance.

Intel’s chips still offer competitive performance, especially in multitasking and productivity scenarios, and may be attractive on deals.

Ultimate choice often comes down to price vs performance and whether you value specialised gaming performance (AMD) or broader performance mix (Intel).

If gaming frame rates are your priority, AMD’s 3D V-Cache processors like the Ryzen 7 9800X3D are currently the best choice in 2026.

For mixed use — gaming plus productivity — a higher-end chip like the Ryzen 9 9950X3D or a fast Intel alternative can be more compelling. And for everyday gamers on a budget, CPUs like Ryzen 5 9600X deliver excellent value and performance.

Why Is My Computer So Slow? A Simple Guide for Beginners

By lisak on February 7, 2026

If your computer takes a long time to start, freezes often, or appears to struggle to open programs, you are not on your own. Many people experience slow computer speed – especially after using the same computer for a few years. The good news is that most slowdowns such as this have simple causes and easy fixes.

Let’s look at the most common reasons your computer might be running at a slow speed and what you can do about it.

1. Too Many Programs Running at Once

When you turn on your computer, many programs will start automatically in the background. Each one uses some of your computer’s memory and power.

Over time, these can pile up and slow everything down.

Signs:

  • Your computer is slow right after turning on
  • Programs take a long time to open
  • The fan runs loudly

What you can do:

  • Close programs you are not using (and remove them from being launched on startup if you do not need them there)
  • Restart your computer regularly (daily is ideal)
  • Remove apps you no longer need

Restarting once every few days can make a big difference.

2. Not Enough Storage Space

Your computer needs free space to work properly. If your hard drive is almost full, your system has less room to operate, which can slow it down.

Signs:

  • You get “Low disk space” warnings
  • Saving files takes longer
  • Updates fail to install

What you can do:

  • Delete old files and downloads
  • Empty the recycle bin
  • Move photos and videos to a USB drive or cloud storage (movies and videos can take up a huge amount of space)

Try to keep at least 15–20% of your storage free at all times.

3. Viruses and Unwanted Software

Sometimes slow computers are caused by harmful programs (viruses) or unwanted apps that run without you knowing.

These can:

  • Use your internet connection
  • Show unwanted ads
  • Track your activity
  • Slow everything down

Signs:

    • Pop-up ads appear often

  • New programs appear that you didn’t install

What you can do:

  • Run a virus scan using your security software
  • Only download programs from trusted websites
  • Avoid clicking suspicious links

Most computers already include basic antivirus protection—make sure it is turned on and updated.

4. Your Computer Is Getting Old

Like phones and cars, computers slow down as they age. New software often needs more power than older machines can provide.

If your computer is more than 5–7 years old, it may struggle with modern programs.

Signs:

  • New apps run very slowly
  • Updates take hours
  • Simple tasks feel difficult

What you can do:

  • Use lighter (simpler) programs
  • Avoid running many apps at once
  • Consider upgrading memory (RAM) or storage (SSD)
  • Think about replacing the computer if it’s very old

A small upgrade can sometimes make an old computer feel new again.

5. Too Many Browser Tabs and Extensions

Web browsers like Chrome, Edge, or Firefox can use a lot of memory—especially if you keep many tabs open.

Each open tab is like a mini-program running in the background.

Signs:

  • Computer slows when using the internet
  • Browser freezes
  • Pages load slowly

What you can do:

  • Close tabs you don’t need
  • Remove browser extensions you don’t use
  • Restart your browser occasionally

Keeping fewer tabs open can instantly improve speed.

6. Software Updates Are Missing

Updates are not just for new features—they also fix problems and improve performance.

If you skip updates, your computer may run poorly or become unsafe.

Signs:

  • You see update reminders
  • Programs crash often
  • Security warnings appear

What you can do:

  • Allow your system to install updates
  • Keep important programs up to date
  • Restart when updates are finished

Updates may take time, but they help your computer work better.

7. The Computer Needs a Fresh Start

Sometimes, after years of use, small problems build up. Even if nothing seems “wrong,” your system may become cluttered.

What you can try first:

  • Restart your computer
  • Clean up files
  • Remove unused programs
  • Run virus scans

If problems continue, a technician can help reset your system safely.

Simple Habits to Keep Your Computer Fast

Here are easy habits that help prevent slowdowns:

✅ Restart weekly
✅ Delete old files monthly
✅ Keep software updated
✅ Avoid unknown downloads
✅ Close unused programs

These small steps can save you a lot of frustration.

When to Get Help

You may need professional help if:

  • Your computer is extremely slow all the time
  • It crashes often
  • You suspect serious virus problems
  • You are unsure what to delete

If the tips in this post have not helped sufficiently then it may be time to take your computer to a repair shop for advice.

A slow computer can be annoying, but it doesn’t always mean something is broken. In most cases, it’s caused by too many programs, low storage, old hardware, or simple maintenance issues.

With a little care and regular cleaning, your computer can stay fast and reliable for years.

Why is my computer running so slow? 9 reasons and fixes

By lisak on November 19, 2025

There are many reasons why a computer can feel slow and many of these reasons have a simple fix. Here are the most likely causes of a slow computer and what you can do to help:

1. Too many programs running at once

  • Web browsers with lots of open tabs
Fix: close tabs as you go and bookmark where necessary to return later
  • Apps running in the background (common culprits are cloud backups and antivirus scans)
Fix:  check Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) and close the apps you don’t need.

2. High CPU, RAM, or disk usage

If one program is hogging resources, your entire system will slow down.
Fix:

  • Windows: go to Task Manager → “Processes”
  • Mac: go to Activity Monitor → “CPU / Memory”

Look for anything at 80–100% and close down those processes

3. Insufficient RAM

This is particularly noticeable if:

  • You use Chrome with many tabs open simoultaneously
  • You run apps which are heavy on RAM (such as games, video editing, etc.)

8 GB is the bare minimum in terms of RAM but 16 GB is optimal.

4. Your storage is nearly full

If your SSD/HDD is above ~85% full, your computer performance  will drop significantly.
Fix: Free up space (temporary or duplicate files) or move files to an external storage device or cloud storage.

5. Hard drive instead of SSD

If your computer still uses an HDD (hard disk drive), things are likely to feel significantly slower than if you use SSD (solid state drive).
Fix: Upgrading to an SSD will boost the speed of your computer, this involves buying and installing a SSD so is not necessarily an easy fix but it will have significant results in terms of speed.

6. Startup programs

Too many apps set to “launch on startup” slows down the boot time for your computer.
Fix: Disable unnecessary startup apps. On a windows machine you do this through settings > apps > startup, on a mac you navigate to this feature via the apple menu > system settings > general > login items

7. Overheating

If your laptop or PC gets too hot, it has a negative impact on performance. You will notice the fans are loud or the device itself feels hot.
Fix: Clean dust and improve ventilation of your device, also keep the machine out of direct sunlight.

8. Malware or unwanted background processes

Malware and unwanted or unnecessary programs can slow down your computer and should be removed
Fix: Run a malware scan and remove any unnecessary programs.

9. Old operating system or drivers

Outdated software can cause conflicts on your system and can also present security issues.
Fix: Update your operating system, graphics drivers, etc.
