Video drivers are one of the most important pieces of software installed on a Windows PC, especially for computer gamers.

Video driver errors, in most cases, can be resolved easily, even by users who have only basic computer knowledge.

Before we look at the steps needed to troubleshoot video driver errors, first let us understand why these errors occur in the first place. Video driver errors occur if:

  1. You’ve installed a new video driver without removing the old video driver
  2. The correct video driver is not installed
  3. There is no video driver installed
  4. The video driver install has become corrupt due to malware infection

Steps to troubleshoot video driver errors

Step 1 – Remove the old video driver before installing the new one
You can experience compatibility issues with your video card if you install a new video driver without removing the old one. To resolve the issue, uninstall your old video driver via Device Manager. This is how you can do this.

  1. Click the Windows icon, type “Devmgmt.msc” in the Start Search box, and then press Enter (for Windows 7 and Vista).
  2. For Windows XP or previous versions, click Start, click Run, type “Devmgmt.msc” in the Run dialog box, and then press Enter.
  3. Expand Display Adapter, and double-click your video card.
  4. Click the Driver tab
  5. Click the Uninstall button to remove the old driver, and follow the onscreen instructions.

Step 2 – Download and install the latest video driver
If your video driver is outdated, or if no video driver is installed, you must download the latest video driver from the manufacturer’s website and install it. Before downloading the video driver, note the model number of your video card. To do this, open the Device Manager window, expand Display Adapter, and note the details of your video card.

Once you’ve downloaded the latest driver, double-click it, and follow the on-screen instructions to install it.

Step 3 – Run a malware scan to remove malware, and then download and install the latest video driver
Malware infection can also cause video driver errors. To fix video driver errors occurring due to malware infection, you will first need to remove or quarantine malware present on your Windows PC. To do this, scan your computer using reliable anti-malware software. Next, download and install the latest driver.
