Add a Printer in Windows 7

By Sushant Mehta on March 26, 2013

To add a printer in Windows 7, perform the steps detailed below:

Printer Drivers Download & Updates
  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Locate and click Devices and Printers
  3. Click Add a printer located at the top
  4. There will be two options in the Add Printer dialog box: Add a local printer and Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer. Select an appropriate option.
  5. If you’ve selected Add a local printer, perform the following steps: Specify the printer port you are going to use, and then click the Next button. Then select the model number and printer manufacturer
  6. If you’ve selected the network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer option, Windows will automatically list all printers installed on your computer. If the printer that you are looking is listed in this list, select it, click Next twice, and then click the Finish button (if you wish, you can print a test page).
  7. If the printer that you are looking for is not listed, click The printer that I want wasn’t listed, and then add the printer using its hostname, IP address, name. Click Next twice after you’ve added the desired printer, and then click the Finish button

Whether you are using one printer or multiple printers, remember to update its Drivers regularly. Otherwise, your printer may not work properly. You can automatically update printer drivers using an efficient driver update tool.

To fix the HP printer ‘0x610000f6 ’ error (also known as “Carriage Jam” error), perform the following steps in the order they appear below. After each step, print a test page. If the test page comes out fine, it means the problem has been rectified and there is no need to try the succeeding troubleshooting steps.

Step 1 – Turn off your printer, and power it on again

  1. Turn off your HP printer by pressing the power button
  2. Wait for 10 seconds
  3. Turn on your HP printer by pressing the power button

Step 2 – Get rid of any paper jams

  1. Remove the USB cable
  2. Remove the power cord (present at the back of your HP printer)
  3. Remove unused paper present in the printer’s tray
  4. Open the rear access door and get rid of any paper stuck inside the printer
  5. Replace the rear access door
  6. Load paper back into the printer’s tray
  7. Connect the power cord and the USB cable

Step 3 – Ensure that the printer cartridge is properly installed

  1. Open your printer’s carriage access door
  2. Remove the cartridge from its slot and insert it back carefully

While this particular error is not caused by a driver issue, outdated or missing printer drivers are the number one cause of many printer errors. You can fix such errors by updating your printer drivers, a task that can be completed at a click of the mouse if you use a driver update tool.

IE 10 now updates in the background

By Sushant Mehta on March 23, 2013

One criticism attached to Microsoft’s web browser, Internet Explorer (IE for short), was that it did not update itself in the background, like all other popular web browsers. This, in turn, affected the performance of the PC.

Finally, some good news has come from Microsoft in this regard: IE 10 now updates itself in the background.

With the talk being on web browser, it would be appropriate to include safe Internet practices in the discussion. You don’t need to be told that malware infection is a serious security threat, but did you know that you can minimize the chances of malware infection by following certain safe Internet practices?

How you surf the web can determine whether your PC becomes infected or not. Some safe Internet practices that you would do well to follow include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Don’t open email attachments without scanning them with an advanced antivirus tool
  • Stay away from websites with dubious content
  • Avoid downloading freeware, and, if you must, scan the downloaded file before running it
  • Stay away from peer to peer sharing sites. Such sites are usually havens for malware programs.
