Hackers inject malicious code into CCleaner

By Sushant Mehta on December 5, 2017

Hackers inject malicious code into CCleaner

According to reports from leading security companies, hackers injected malicious code into CCleaner, a popular PC cleaner tool. The CCleaner malware has affected around 2.27 million users.

According to the report, hackers have injected malicious code of data harvesting software that piggybacks on the CCleaner installer program. The company has mentioned the versions of CCleaner 5.33.6162 and CCleaner Cloud 1.07.3191 are infected and has urged the users to upgrade to version 5.34 or higher.

Are you at risk?

Though the CCleaner malware infected 2.25 million PC’s between the period l August 15, 2017, to September 15, 2017, the main target of the malware was specific tech firms in US, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, and the UK.

The security report also mentioned the attackers were only interested in a specific subset of PC users who worked in tech firms. High profile technology companies like Sony, HTC, Samsung, and telecommunication companies like Vodafone, SingTel, and O2, and tech Intel, Cisco, VMware, Microsoft, Google, Linksys, Dlink Epson, MSI, and Akamai were some of the companies that were on the target list of the malware.

According to Cisco Talos report, the malicious code was intended for a sophisticated supply chain attack to infect a vast number of machines. The second payload of the attack was more complex and used anti-debugging and anti-emulation tricks.

What should you do to stay safe?

Avast has urged users to not only uninstall the infected version of CCleaner but also restore backups of their system to ensure no malware is resident on their systems.

Security experts advise users who installed the 32-bit version of CCleaner 5.33.6162 or CCleaner Cloud 1.07.3191 to reformat their hard drives to make the attack in future more difficult. Simply uninstalling the compromised version of CCleaner will only clear the first stage infection of the malware.

What data did malware gather?

According to a report published on Piriform blog, the malware collected the following information

  • Name of the computer
  • MAC addresses of 1st three adapters
  • List of installed applications including Windows updates
  • List of running processes
  • Additional information such as whether the system is running 64-bit OS and which applications are running with administrative privileges

Thus you can see the malware collected more information about the local system and is not intended to steal your personal or financial data. However, security experts see more risk in malware collecting local system information.

According to them, the attacker must have invested heavily in creating such intelligent fileless malware and the information collected by the malware in the first stage makes it easy for the attacker to deliver future payloads to the machine without being detected.

The possibility of future attack cannot be ignored

The way the malware infected machines is very clever. The malware was able to gain control of the digital signing of the certificate on the infected machines.

The malware continued to operate in stealth mode for 31 days which can be considered a major feat. Again after the delivery of the first payload, the attacker also distributed advanced second payload of the malware to specific machines. Researchers are not able to fully understand the execution and the intention of the second payload that increases the risk in future.

Though the CCleaner cloud version1.07.3191 was also compromised, the tool did not affect any Android users. Piriform has released a statement saying that the current threat is resolved and the rogue server is down and the potential servers are out of the control of the attacker.

The company is working with government and security agencies to analyze the threat and have assured users they will take the right steps internally to ensure they never face such risks in future.

Review of HP Omen 17

By Sushant Mehta on December 4, 2017

Review of HP Omen 17

The HP Omen is a popular gaming laptop series. HP has recently introduced a new design for the Omen and some improvements for the 15 and 17-inch models. If you are looking for a no-compromise desktop replacement for gaming, the HP Omen 17 can be a good option to consider.

Below we will take a detailed look at the HP Omen 17.

HP Omen 17: Design

The design of the HP Omen 17 has improved and as the company itself states, it is inspired by the design of fighter jets and spacecraft! The fiber-like texturing and the angled air vents give a definitive look to the laptop. The new design is not only about the looks but also works well in enhancing the performance of the laptop.

The new air vents increase the maximum airflow by 20% which prevents the laptop from over-heating during extended gaming sessions. Despite the bigger vents, the thickness of the laptop is only 1.3 inches, which is less than other gaming laptops. However, it is a bit heavier than its predecessor and weighs around 8.1lbs.

The laptop features two cold-swappable hard drive slots on the front, and unlike earlier models, the HP Omen 17 can also be configured with dual graphics cards.

HP Omen 17: Screen

Gamers have two options in terms of the laptop screen for their HP Omen 17. They can either go for 17.3 inches Full HD IPS W-LED backlit display with antiglare coat offering a resolution 1920X1080 pixels or a 17.3 inch 4K IPS W-LED backlit display offering a higher resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels.

HP Omen 17: Processor and Graphics

The HP Omen 17 is powered by an Intel iCore i7 processor with a clock frequency of 2.8GHZ which can be throttled to 3.8GHz by some CPU overclocking. The lower configuration of HP Omen 17 features NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 106 graphics chips with 6GB dedicated DDR5 memory while the higher configuration of HP Omen 17 features NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 graphics chip with 8GB DDR5 dedicated memory.

The powerful graphics card with more than sufficient graphics RAM gives the laptop the ability to play the latest games seamlessly.

HP Omen 17: Hard Drive and Memory

The HP Omen 17 features 1TB 7200rpm SATA hard drive and a 256GB PCIe SSD. The presence of the SSD drive makes the laptop more responsive, leading to a superior gaming experience. The laptop is fitted with 32GB DDR4 RAM which is plenty for most demanding games.

HP Omen 17: Ports

The HP Omen 17 has a wide variety of ports and in good numbers. The majority of the ports are located on the left side. You get Ethernet, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type C, SD card reader, microphone and a headset port as well.

The Type C port also supports Thunderbolt 3, which was missing in the earlier model. If that’s not enough, the laptop also includes a pair of Type A, USB 3.1 (Gen 1) connectors, in addition to the power connector on the right side.

Though the design of the laptop is good, performing an upgrade is not so easy. You have to remove at least 10 screws to get access to important parts like RAM, and the Hard drive, this could be considered a flaw in the design.

HP Omen 17: Keyboard & Touchpad

This laptop features a full-sized backlit keyboard with red backlighting. You get a full 10-keypad and a row of macro keys on the left. The touchpad has not changed much but there is scope for improvement. Though the touchpad is sensitive and works well, it falls short in performance when you compare it with those on the Surface laptop or Surface Book.

HP Omen 17: Battery life

The new Omen laptop is powered by an 8-cell 86 Wh Lithium-ion Battery that offers a backup of 8 hours and 15 minutes with FHD panel and up to 6 hours and 45 minutes with UHD 4K panel. That’s a pretty good battery life for a gaming laptop.

HP Omen 17: Other features

You have two options in the Windows operating system: Windows 10 Home 64-bit or Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. Though it is a gaming laptop, there are several discount offers for Office suite and antivirus products. The laptop is fitted with an HP Wide Vision HD Camera with a dual array digital microphone and Bang & Olufsen, dual speakers.

HP Omen 17: Gaming Performance

If you are looking for a gaming laptop, it is useful to get an idea of the performance of the HP Omen 17 in 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme. Gaming experts who put the laptop through the gaming performance tests were satisfied with the results.

The graphics chip GTX 1070 performs well and the scores are better than GTX 1060 but below GTX 1080. In comparison to its predecessor, the new HP Omen 17 is 3% faster.

The Rise of the Tomb Raider is an ultimate game to test your laptop’s graphics card’s capability. The HP Omen 17 with 120 Hz, 1080 display can crank a 100fps in The Rise of the Tomb Raider game at the highest resolution (1080)—a quite impressive feat, indeed.

HP Omen 17: Non-gaming performance

If you are looking to use the HP Omen 17 for occasional video editing, you will not be disappointed. The laptop powered by Intel i-core i7 processor and 32GB RAM is able to handle the encoding of Handbrake video with ease.

HP Omen 17: Conclusion

The HP Omen 17 is a few steps ahead of its predecessors on many fronts. However, the ordinary touchpad and nothing-too-special audio might make the deal less sweet for some buyers.

The laptop has great aesthetics and the lack of Thunderbolt 3 has been corrected in this model. The laptop is good looking enough and fast enough. It also includes some great features. So overall, it gives you great value for money.

The aggressive pricing of the HP Omen 17 makes it difficult for gamers to ignore this model. If you are seriously looking for “value” in a high-end gaming laptop, the HP Omen 17 could be the right candidate.

Have a Yahoo Account? Important Security Tips

By Sushant Mehta on November 28, 2017

Have a Yahoo Account? Important Security Tips

According to a security report released by Yahoo, if you had a Yahoo account in 2013, it was most likely hacked, and if you are still using the account, you must secure your email account by taking the necessary steps.

As per the report, around 3 billion accounts were compromised and the hackers were able to find usernames and passwords for a large number of email accounts.

If you have a Yahoo mail account, you should immediately change the password.

Here are some additional security tips you need to follow to secure a Yahoo account.

Avoid reusing passwords

With so many password management solutions easily available, it makes no sense to reuse passwords across different mail accounts and websites. You need to follow a policy of creating a unique and complex password for every mail account, including your Yahoo account. If you are having trouble remembering passwords, you can use passphrases. For example, you can use a phrase you like and include some numbers and punctuation marks in it.

According to a report published by Yahoo, the company had detected a security breach back in 2013 when they stored the passwords in the form of MD5 hashes that can be easily cracked. If you haven’t changed your Yahoo email account password for a long time, you should change the password immediately and also review the security of your email account.

There is a possibility hackers have already hacked your account and had enough time to steal sensitive data. So without any further delay, change your Yahoo account password to secure your email account.

Secure your account with two-step verification

Today almost every email service provider, including Yahoo, offers two-step verification for accounts. The two-step verification requires the user to enter the OTP code sent by the email service provider. The OTP code is sent to the mobile number registered with your Yahoo account. If you haven’t linked your phone number with your Yahoo account, do so now and activate the two-step verification to secure your Yahoo account.

Yahoo has gone a step further and has completely done away with the use of passwords to access your account. The company has introduced a new feature “Account Key” that requires sign-in approval via phone notifications. The two-step verification is an additional layer of security which will protect unauthorized access to your email account even if the hacker steals the password.

Don’t save unnecessary emails

Since email service providers provide around 1GB or more space to email users, space is no longer a problem. However, this feature puts your email account at risk in another way.

Because we usually no longer delete unnecessary emails, it is easier for hackers to doscover which other accounts are linked to your Yahoo email account. They can easily find out information about other email accounts or other user accounts by searching for emails related to sign-up or notification emails that include important information.

Besides gathering information about different mail and other user accounts, the hackers can also uncover the pattern you use for creating account names or usernames.

With this in mind it is important to consider cleaning up your inbox. Delete all unnecessary emails like sign-up emails, password reset emails and other notification emails in order to make your Yahoo account more secure.

Check your mail forward settings

Email forwarding is generally a “set and forget it” setting. Since the setting is buried inside mail settings menu, we only access it when we need to set new email forwarding settings.

Hackers are aware of this behavior and can exploit it to get access to your emails without your knowledge. They only need to gain access to your Yahoo email account once and set up a mail forwarding rule so that important emails are automatically forwarded to their email account. This also works in their favor as you will never get information about suspicious log-in attempts from unrecognized locations or IP addresses.

It is very important to check your email forwarding settings immediately to ensure hackers have not exploited this option. If you see any suspicious or unrecognized email forwarding rule set, delete the rule immediately. Also, make it a habit to periodically check your email forwarding settings for any suspicious activity.

Check reply-to settings

The Reply-to settings can also be exploited by the hacker to get access to sensitive emails and information. After hacking your email account, hackers can easily change the reply-to settings so that people replying to your emails will reply to hackers instead. The hacker can make subtle changes in the email address that are hard to notice at a glance. The risk in reply-to email is higher as the hacker can also change the display name to your known contacts to hide the email address.

Change your security questions and answers

Remember security question plays an important role in “forgot password” procedure. It is necessary so you can easily remember the answer by looking at the question, but at the same time the question must be hard enough to prevent others from guessing the answer.

Most sites ask you to set security questions and answers. Use this option to your advantage by asking tough questions and the answers that would be extremely hard to guess.

You should change the security question to ensure it is

  • Not easily guessed or searched
  • Is simple yet definitive
  • Doesn’t change over time
  • Is memorable

Phishing is followed by breaches

Generally phishing attempts will come in quick succession after security breaches such as that experienced by Yahoo. Hackers are known to send security notifications that contain instructions to download malware on your computer. These malicious tools can then direct users to malicious websites where you are required to key in additional information under the guise of additional verification.

Be sure to check the source of such notification emails that request you to download some security tool. Yahoo users can easily recognize genuine emails from the service provider. These notifications emails can be easily recognized in Yahoo mail interface and it is marked by purple Y! Icon. Email service providers don’t ask users to enter additional information on third-party pages. So be selective when sharing information on external links.

The security tips above will help secure your Yahoo account. You should change your password periodically to ensure you maintain this security.
