Drinking drivers dodge punishment

Date: Sunday, 30. July 2006

We've heard the story before, but a new study released an July 22 reveals the depth of the problem - many hard core drinking drivers are simply ignoring the court system and carrying on driving.

The study, which was funded by Anheuser Busch, included a survey of 890 probation and parole officers from 41 states. It revealed the top problems that impede the effective monitoring of hard core drunk drivers.- non-compliance with court orders, overwhelming caseloads and conflict between the primary goals of enforcement and rehabilitation. Officers with staggering caseloads are a big problem, the average being more than 100 offenders, with some case loads in the thousands!

The survey, which was carried out by Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF), was presented at the annual meeting of the National Conference of State Legislatures in San Francisco. It was part of a three-year study, "Stopping The Revolving Door: DWI System Improvements For Dealing With Hard Core Drinking Drivers." It is a comprehensive look at the problem and potential solutions. It identified the top three problems as non-compliance, overwhelming caseloads and conflicting goals.

Andres,

Yes, T Bob but you don't know that George Billrey, mom wasn't in her mind what I dink they should do is to give the drunk driver a treament.

Virgilio Ramirez,

I think their punishment should beto be in jail for atleast 2 years

T Bob,

Its a big deal if you get caught or kill somebody but Rose is right. Some people are doing it again and again and it doesn't get through to them. If someone keeps doing it there should be jail time. After 9 years it should be off your record.

George Billrey,

don't you know it. My mom was drinking and driving but what's the big deal?

Rose Brownlee,

That's not right. I mean my dad had his licence taken away for drinking and driving. The man hasn't had a single drop of alochol in exactly 9 years and they still wont give his licence back. It is rediculus these people that go to court numerous times for drinking and driving and only get a slap on the wrist. I think that they need to re-evaluate what they are doing and how they are punishing people.
