New technology will allow drivers to pay for parking on cell phones. Tests in England by phone company Ericsson had two hundred drivers using the system, which allows them to extend their parking time by phone if a meeting or errand takes longer than expected. According to the story on Ananova, drivers will receive a text message when the parking time is about to expire. Payment is taken directly from a credit card or bank account, and the driver can either use voice recognition technology or text messaging to pay for parking. Police can confirm payment by checking the car registration on a hand-held device used curbside.
