The Chicago Fire Department and other fire departments in municipalities in Illinois are taking advantage of technology to aid in their work. In a recent 911 emergency about someone having breathing difficulties, the Midlothian IL, team typed the address into its intranet and downloaded information about the person's history of heart problems and where the medications were stored. About 10 percent of the town's resident's have provided similar details to the emergency response database. The Chicago Fire Department has used laptops in firetrucks since 1998. Information sent to the laptops from the city's 911 center may include the address, who called and information from the caller, plus a map of a building.
