Speed cameras hit Washington

Date: Monday, 26. October 2009

Speed radar cameras are in the news today on CNN and in the Washington Post. Washington D.C. police are ending their grace period amid concerns over revenue vs. safety. Five Ford Crown Victoria cruisers have been equipped with cameras that aim a narrow beam across a street and snap a photo if a vehicle is above a proscribed speed.

The program is touching off heated discussion around the Washington area, with accusations the cameras are geared to revenue rather than safety. The cameras are operated by officers working overtime and the cruisers, which cost about $100,000 each, including the camera set up, are being paid for by Lockheed Martin Corp., which manufactures the cameras and will receive $29 for each ticket issued.

Rick,

George Orwell's 1984 is right on target with what's ahead. Amazing that he understood that the technology Genie could not be put back in the bottle and would continue to be abused.
