Digital technology is all around us, from desktop computers, to electronic game systems, WebTV, and MP3 music files. Our cars have lots of computers and digital technology too, although, up to now, very little of it has invaded the passenger cabin.

However, car manufacturers, parts suppliers, and various technology companies are itching to change that. If they can find a way to do it without obviously compromising safety they would like us to have Internet connections, email, telephones, navigation systems, and emergency information systems. They would also like us to have stock market reports, unlimited traffic information, and channels for access to local services such as restaurants, theatres, news, weather, traffic, and anything else that might catch our fancy. Devices such as Visteon's MP3-CD player hold the promise of major musical convenience, but as Wall Street Journal writer Walter S. Mossberg, points out, this technology, like others, has bugs that need to be sorted out - and potential driver distraction is always a wild card. Wall Street Journal article .
