Ford Focus beats Jaguar and Mercedes for comfort, says survey

Pity the affluent readers of Britain's prestigious newspaper, The Times. They must have almost choked on their marmalade and toast when the butler delivered their morning paper to the breakfast table.

The offending article-actually the report of a survey done by What Car? magazine-claimed that the humble Ford Focus hatchback was more comfortable to ride in than a Mercedes-Benz costing more than four times as much.

To add insult to injury, the survey also rated the Ford Focus 1.8 Ghia, one of Britain's top- selling models, as giving a better ride than the trendy Jaguar S-type.

The magazine survey was conducted by Dean Southall, a leading automotive ergonomist who awarded points for ease of access, driving position, seat comfort, control layout, and visibility.

In addition to the Focus, the Volvo S80, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Mondeo, and Alfa 156 placed in Southall's top 10 selections. Other highly rated cars included the Renault Espace, the new Volkswagen Polo, and the Nissan Primera.

Next thing we know, milord will be climbing into the back seat of a Ford with the exhortation "Home, James, and don't spare the horses."
