What is Car to X communication?

We're looking at a future filled with information bearing wireless waves, a world in which vehicles will exchange all kinds of information with one another and in which information will also be exchanged with infrastructure items such as bridges, traffic lights, signs and road curves.

The technologies for this futuristic world are already being tested out and the major players in the game are already cooperating over standards that can be used in countries around the world and between all kinds of vehicles no matter who the manufacturer.

Some of the enthusiasts for this wirelessly interconnected world of traffic are already looking beyond to a world in which vehicles can actually operate without drivers at all!

Car2Car

Several car makers have already tested their own versions of parts the system. For example General Motors has developed a "vehicle-to-X" communication system that is independent of the vehicle type or the manufacturer. Ford has tested a "smart intersection" system near its headquarters in Detroit.

Just last month, several vehicle manufacturers presented their latest efforts at Duderhofen in Germany. Volkswagen Passat and Golf models were rigged to participate in ad hoc LAN network systems, the cars interacting with simulated road situations such as construction, police vehicles, hidden motorcycles, parked cars. Data such as road speed, engine speed, wheel speeds and status of the hazard flashers was exchanged through the network. .

Vehicles can establish communication within a few hundred meters distance. This information is typically relayed back to the driver via warning sounds or small display screens.

The interests of the various stakeholders in the system are being coordinated through the Car-2-Car Communication Consortium (C2C CC). Nine auto manufacturers Audi, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Honda, Opel, Renault, VW and Volvo) are participating in the European effort.

Dionel Acosta,

May be in a near future, will be possible that cars can exchange information such as: speed, acceleration to let car in the back position to take care about it.

telesnip,

I just read another article on this site about laws against using mobiles and having screens visible to the driver. (www.drivers.com/article/1032).

How does that law against distractions align with this invasion of wireless information implied in Car2Car.

Have these guys thought this out?
