A survey by marketing and consulting company J.D. Power and Associates concluded that 26 of the 36 car brands sold in the United States have improved in quality over 2007.

The survey is an annual ranking of "initial vehicle quality." It takes into account mechanical and design problems in the first 90 days of ownership. Porsche was the top brand. Honda, however, did best, being the only brand with three winners - the Fit subcompact, the Civic small car and the CR-V crossover.

Toyota, General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. had three winners from all of their brands.

In the 'worst' category, Chrysler LLC Jeep took the prize with 167 problems per 100 vehicles. Chrysler was joined in the bottom five by BMW AG's MINI, Land Rover, GM's Saturn, and Suzuki.

The Volkswagen Passat was cited as the most improved and the Chevrolet Malibu and the Infiniti EX-Series were commended for their new-model initial launch quality.

The rankings emerged from questionnaires given to 81,500 people who bought or leased new 2008 vehicles between November and January. The questionnaires asked 228 questions on issues ranging from handling, braking and engine trouble to seat comfort and stereo systems.
