New mini simulator
· Date: 2008-01-30
The National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) developed by the University of Iowa is a very expensive project aimed at serving the research community. Now there's a mini NADS that's designed to be more affordable and portable.
The NADS was the result of a $50 million project conducted under the aegis of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is billed as "the most sophisticated research driving simulator in the world." It's housed in a large dome which can accommodate entire cars and the cabs of trucks and buses mounted on a motion platform which allows almost 400 meters horizontal and longitudinal travel and nearly 360 degrees of rotation.
A driver can feel acceleration, braking and steering cues as if actually driving a real car, truck or bus.
The NADS MiniSim is designed to harness the power of the larger NADS computer and offer a portable version which can be conveniently utilized for research, development, clinical and training applications. ![]()
