Wisconsin--Iron Mountain to Eagle River

Driving route map While Northern Wisconsin is full of lovely scenery, Route 70 is the best choice, as it takes you across the Nicolet National Forest for unbroken majestic views of the Northwoods. Take U.S. 2 west a few miles out of Iron Mountain, Michigan, and pick up Route 70 toward Eagle River. The rolling hills of this route offer vista after vista of this forest primeval.

The ride is perhaps best enjoyed just before a summer sunset, as golden hues bathe the treetops. Be warned, however, as this is prime deer time and deer are everywhere. The abundant wildlife of the area is best enjoyed from the many National Forest hiking trails and the couple of campgrounds along the way. But despite the smooth curves and relative remoteness of this fine road, you'll find the forest's relaxing effect will make you want to take it slowly. Your sunset drive will time you perfectly to come in for dinner at the White Spruce Inn in Eagle River. This restaurant, built around a historic log cabin on the river, was once on the edge of town, but now you'll have to drive past expanding strip malls and big discount stores to find it. Try the smoked BBQ ribs, they're some of the best in the country.

Eagle River is the seat of Vilas County, the most lake-dotted county in Wisconsin, so opportunities for boating, fishing, and all kinds of summer activities abound. Route 70 is also well-maintained during northern Wisconsin's harsh winter, and that time of year offers a very different look into the region. For winter types, don't forget Eagle River is the "Snowmobile Capital of the World," and hosts the World Championship Snowmobile Derby and 500 miles of snowmobile trails. Tiny Eagle River's population swells exponentially during vacation season, but don't despair at having to return to civilization. Route 70 keeps going west across the state if you want to get back out in the woods, and virtually every turnoff is another scenic drive.
