72-hour crackdown on truckers

As part of a nationwide safety drive, the North Carolina Highway Patrol and the U.S. DOT are conducting a check blitz of truckers and their trucks at inspection stations along state highways. Police officers will inspect trucks at weigh stations and check for drivers who might have spent too much time on the road, reports the Fayetteville Observer's Fayetteville Online.

Authorities are putting the brakes on commercial truckers during Operation Roadcheck 2003, a 72-hour program to promote highway safety. The program is sanctioned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and the Department of Homeland Security. Inspections will be conducted at load stations across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Officers will enter the truck company's DOT identification number into a database as the trucks pass through the weigh stations. If an inspection is due or the company has a history of violations, officers will conduct a detailed inspection to ensure the truck meets state safety requirements. Read the Fayetteville Online article.

Folks, sorry about the confusion, but if you read the date of this article, it is from 2003, and is archived on our site.

I think this check is every year. I heard Arizona is starting the 2006 checks on June 6. maybe its the same in other states

Looks like LTL Willie is right. Check this web site - http://www.dps.state.az.us/news/CVSSDETAIL.pdf

It says "During Operation Road Check, federal, state, provincial and local officers will be conducting North American Standards Inspections around teh clock for 72 hours from June 6 - 8 throughout North America."

Brian, on Wednesday, 06. June 2007 at 06:32 PM

I would like to know if it still going on i heard people there is nothing going on out there

trucker, on Wednesday, 06. June 2007 at 07:41 PM

if you all had your equiptment in good shape all the time you wouldnt have to worry about the inspection, your truck should be ready for an inspection 365 days a year

Gracie, on Thursday, 07. June 2007 at 06:57 AM

On I20 westbound in Mississippi I was given a complete inspection at the first scale and passed. It took 45 minutes to complete. Leaving the state, I was given an overweight ticket for 2000 lbs on the trailer axle. It took 30 minutes to write this ticket. How can the scales be so off? 5 miles later, Louisiana had no problem with the weight. This 72 hr push just gives numbers for DOT to use and to manipulate. They should just work the scales on a regular basis and give up this publicity stunt.

I bet trucker is a commie lib democrat! He argues with imaginary information. If he knew the facts supported by dot surveys he wouldn't have made his B S statement. Its not any wonder people think truckers are stupid with drivers like trucker running thier mouth.

Dixie, on Monday, 02. June 2008 at 12:00 AM

Our company shuts down business for those 3 days to avoid the harrassment.
We all carry current inspections, but
during those 3 days you get cruel and unusual treatment!!!

chris, on Tuesday, 03. June 2008 at 08:22 AM

the way dot is and the cost of fuel the 72 hrs shit would be a great time to park our rigs and sit for awhile if everyone would do it then we as truckers might get some respect back from the government

bojo, on Tuesday, 03. June 2008 at 01:15 PM

ELLEN WILLIAMS SC, on Tuesday, 03. June 2008 at 01:23 PM

JUST HEARD ABOUT THIS 72 HR DOT INSPECTION. THEY SHOULD GET THE MEXICAN TRUCKS CROSSING THE BORDERS. AS DRIVERS WE HAVE TO HAVE ALL OUR STUFF TOGETHER. I THINK IT IS JUST AS FARE FOR THE MEXICANS TO ABIDE BY ARE REGUALTIONS AN RULES. WITH THE HIGH COST OF FUEL AN TAXES JUST SOMETHING ELSE TO COME AFTER DRIVERS. SOME OWNERS OF TRUCKS DONT WANT TO FIX THERE EQUIPMENT AN LEAVES THERE DRIVERS WITH FINES AN MAKES THEM LOOK BAD AN HAVE TO PAY FOR THERE MESS
