The U.K. has lots of surveillance cameras and the public want more, according to an Evening Standard article. Despite the fact that the number of drivers punished for speeding will soon double to 2 million in London, the public still overwhelmingly support them and want more, writes David Williams, Motoring Editor of the Evening Standard.
The pressure group, Transport 2000, says only 20 per cent of Londoners opposed
more widespread use of the cameras. The group recently commissioned a survey
of 1,074 Londoners and is challenging the Department of Transport over its ruling
that speed cameras should be painted bright yellow and placed conspicuously.
Transport 2000 wants the ruling overturned, claiming that attempts to make speed
traps more visible will cause more accidents as drivers brake on spotting them.
The group wants the government to stop caving in to unreasonable motorist demands
and reflect the views of ordinary people rather than a minority of drivers who,
they say, want to take risks. Read
