Truck tolls by radio


A toll collection system based on a transmitter-receiver attached to trucks and the GPS tracking system is being developed in Europe. A contract worth between $5 billion and $6 billion is being awarded to develop the system, which can also be used by trucking companies to track deliveries and manage their fleets. A group made up of DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Telekom and French toll road operator Cofiroute beat out Vodafone Group, Royal Dutch/Shell and German gas station company Aral to gain the inside track for the contract.

Money from the tolls, which apply to trucks over 12 tons, is to be used for projects to reduce congestion on the country's roads. The tolls are scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, 2003. Read full Yahoo articleEnd of Article
