Pennsylvania drivers will not face a ban on the use of cell phones while driving.
A new research report that indicates a low level of crashes could be tied directly
to mobile phone use has led legislators to abandon efforts to stop the phone
use. According to the article
in the Post-Gazette , the report by the Joint State Government
Commission found that "3.5 percent of crashes reported to police statewide
during 1999 and 2000 were at least partially attributed to distractions. Only
a tiny fraction--0.4 percent--was specifically tied to cell phones." Although
distractions are underreported as a cause of collisions, by how much is not
known. The report's authors suggest that other distractions are equally problematic.
New York remains the only state with a ban on phone use while driving. ![]()
