SUVs--not so tough, not so rugged

Date: 2001-07-31

A minor bump with your new SUV could cost more than US $2,000, according to new tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Only one of seven new mid-size SUVs tested recently by the Institute performed adequately in low-speed (5mph) crashes. Crash costs ranged from $124 for a bump into a flat barrier in a 2001 Accura MDX to $3,597 for a bump into a pole at the rear with a 2002 Buick Rondezvous. Other crashes tested included 5mph backwards into a flat barrier and forwards into an angle barrier.

Of the seven SUVs tested, the Acura MDX came out best. The Institute also tested the 2001 Toyota Highlander, the 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the 2001 Pontiac Aztec, the 2002 Isuzu Axiom, the 2002 Buick Rendezvous and the 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara. Read the CNN.com article
