Truck driving jobs in the U.S.
Due to popular demand, we are writing a series of guides for overseas truck drivers looking for jobs in Canada, the U.S. and Australia. Last week we covered Canada jobs and in this article we will look at the options for foreign drivers applying for truck driving jobs in the United States.
What are the job opportunities for truck drivers in the U.S.?
The U.S. trucking industry has been hit hard by the recent recession and is only starting to recover. There are even talks of a potential driver shortage due to an aging population of truckers coupled with the introduction of more stringent safety laws (resulting in many drivers losing their trucking licenses). According to ustruck.com “The U.S. trucking industry will need to hire about 200,000 drivers by the end of this year, and will need to add another 200,000 by the end of 2011”.
Who can apply for truck driving jobs in the United States?
First of all to work in the U.S. you will need a visa and the best option for this is the H-2B visa category, which allows for temporary or seasonal work. This visa category requires first of all that you have an employer who has offered you a job, and this employer must provide the following:
- verification that the job is for a limited period (under 12 months)
- a temporary Labor Certification from the US Department of Labor to prove a shortage of available US workers in your profession
- verification that you have experience in your particular profession (written evidence/ references will be required)
The Office of Foreign Labor Certification (OFLC) state: "To obtain certification employers must show that there are insufficient qualified U. S. workers available and willing to perform the work at the prevailing wage paid for the occupation. The intent is to ensure that admitting foreign workers does not adversely affect job opportunities, wages and working conditions for Americans."
Employment requirements for truck driving jobs in U.S.
Apart from having a heavy vehicle driving license, most trucking companies require you to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). There are many trucking schools in the U.S. offering training for the CDL and your employer should provide you with information regarding this.
According to a trucking website, the “Commercial Motor Vehicle or CDL is required in the United States to operate any type of vehicle with a weight over 26,000 lb (11,793 kg) including (but not limited to) tow trucks, tractor trailers and buses.”
How do I apply for a truck driving job in U.S.?
We have a drivers job section here at drivers.com so start there. There are also a number of other trucking jobs websites listed at the end of the article. You will need relevant experience, to be over 18 years of age (or 21 if the job involves crossing state lines) and a clean driving record is helpful!

I have made enquiries into Truck Driving in the States and have come across several obstacles that can of course be over-come. However, assistance or sponsorship would be greatly appreciated.
I have looked at a Truck Driving School in Colorado for example, who have advised that I need a license for one full year before a Trucking firm will consider me for employment.
I have a Colorado Driving Handbook here and have considered it carefully. Other then the speed differences and working in Miles per hour instead of Kilometres per hour, I find it very easy to follow and understand.
I need to organise a US Drivers License in a particular State…
I need to organise a Green Card (Residency Entitlement or other…)
I need to make myself know to the IRS
I need to organise a Social Security Number.
All of this seems very daunting from here in New Zealand with no contacts in the States.
