Drivers in hot demand across Europe as airports closed for business

By: Lisa Keegan

Date: Monday, 19. April 2010

The ongoing eruption of Icelands Eyjafjallajokull volcano and the resulting ash cloud has caused the worst air travel chaos since 9/11. Numerous airports across Europe have been closed and thousands of planes grounded due to the risks posed by flying in or near this ash cloud, which is now covering much of Northern and Western Europe.

Stranded business travelers and holiday makers all over Europe are trying to get home by any means possible and this means the rail and car rental companies are reaping the benefits. Many taxi companies are also cashing in on longer fares, actor and comedian John Cleese took a cab from Oslo to Brussels costing 30,000 kroner (over US$5,000), after his intended flight was grounded due to the volcanic ash plume from Iceland. He told Norwegian TV2 that the taxi was his only option as both boat and train tickets were sold out.

Being stranded in the French Riviera is one thing but there are those who need to return home for medical reasons or for important family events, and for these people hitching a lift with other drivers may be their only lifeline.

If there was ever a time to take up carpooling, this is it! Post comments below if you have any ideas/ suggestions for those stranded across Europe.
