SatNav traffic info comes to Dublin

Starting in January, 2010, the Hungarian company TrafficNav will begin feeding traffic information and info about road closures and other problems to users of SatNav devices in Dublin.

The Dublin City Council announced an agreement with TrafficNav last week. However, the information system will not be immediately available to all SatNav users. Users of Map Master devices are already equipped to access the service. Other brand device users, such as Garmin and TomTom, will need to ensure their device is enabled to receive the "Traffic Message Channel."

If not, they may have to purchase an additional hardware device to Receive the service. In addition, only devices equipped with the latest city maps will be able to use the information service.

This kind of traffic information service is available in many parts of Europe, and will likely come to other parts of Ireland as the system becomes more popular.

Hi Kenny - thanks for the comments and totally agree - good for environment and the economy has to be a good thing!

The sooner these services reach every part of the country the better. Think of the savings of time, fuel, pollution, frustration. The government should make a real push to get it country wide. It would be a boost to the economy. It might even be worth it economically to subsidize the cost.
