Puzzling results from red light camera trials

Date: Thursday, 28. December 2006

The city of Regina, Saskatchewan, has been trying out red light traffic surveillance cameras since 2001. Two cameras are rotated between five locations in the city as part of a two-year test program. The results are positive: violations down more than 40% at one intersection and about 30% at another. However, there has been a side effect which Regina police didn't expect - collisions were up slightly at the intersections at which cameras were located. One intersection in particular showed an increase of 51% in crashes, mostly rear-end collisions. Police Chief Cal Johnston says he's puzzled by the numbers, which will be studied further. The program will continue but will not expand this year, says Johnson. It's revenue neutral, he adds.

gabe,

those tickets dont make sense but maybe they do all of that different in canada

Brian,

Of course rear-end collisions go up. If the City of Regina had even done some basic research they would have discovered studies, reports, etc. indicated this is very common - probably more so than locations which do not have an increase in rear-end collisions.

Tell them to wake up and smell the coffee...

Walter H.,

Throughout most of North America right turns on a red are permitted. However, that does NOT mean you don't have to stop. Legally, you have to stop before the white stop line (if there is one) and if not, before the first line of the crosswalk. Then you can go ahead and make your right turn if it is clear.

Soul,

I have a similar RLC ticket last week photoed at Sheppard/Bathurst. I need experienced advicebefore I set a trial. I was making a right hand turn. First photo shows the red light and my car's right turn blinker and brake light are on. The second photo shows 2 seconds later with my car disappeared from the intersection. The third photo shows my license plate close-up. The notice stated " .. failing to stop at a red light..vehicle approaching the the intersections , at which time the signals had displayed red for 2.4 seconds and the vehicle proceeded through the intersection when the light had been red for 4.4 seconds. Does it mean that I ran on red " straight through the intersection or I didn't stop on red long enough to make the right turn (in Toronto)? Do I have chance to fight the charge or just have to pay (it's $180)? Any advice would be appreciated!

Irfan,

Lorie, I also had the same problem. I have to fight the ticket as well.

Lorie,

Just curious to see if anyone has received an erroneous red light traffic ticket in the mail as I did.

My ticket states that I stopped at the intersection on a light that had been red for .8 seconds (which I did). But then it went on to say that I went through the light after it had been red for 2 seconds. I was making a right hand turn, which is shown quite clearly in the picture. I went back to the intersection to see if there was a 'no right hand turn on a red' sign posted and there is not.

I am now forced to take a day off work to fight City Hall. I wish there was a way to fine the City of Toronto for my time and lost wages.

Steve,

People are probably more aware now that the cameras are there and probably jumping on the brakes as to not get ticketed therefore causing an inattentative driver more apt to rearend someone. Sound reasonable?
