British scientist against cell phone ban in cars

Sir William Stewart, the UK Government's former chief scientific adviser and now head of a research program into the use of mobiles phones told the Independent Newspaper recently that he is against a ban on mobile phone use while driving. "I would argue against a ban," he said. "People should be fined if they are found driving erratically, not just because they are using a mobile phone."

The UK Department of Transport is claiming that motorists who use a mobile are four times more likely to have an accident than other drivers. A recent study conducted by the Royal Automobile Club found that 39 per cent of motorists have used a mobile phone while driving. About 80% of mobile phone users in Britain support a ban. Cell phones aren't the real problem. There are so many other things people do in cars, like eating or talking to other passengers, that distracts them just as much as phones do. If they want to make driving safe, they should ban distracted or irrensponsible driving altogether.

I dont think cell phones should be banned. It is something you own, not a deadly thing. People should just be more responsible and more careful

Well I think that anything you do could risk your life just as much as you or someone else around you using a cell phone while driving. You could get hurt / die do anything in your life. Yes there is a higher risk, but if it's that important for you to live then you wouldn't do anything.

Frank, If you were involved in 10 near accidents... I believe it was you that was on the phone !

On the other hand, if phones are so bad why has there not been an explosion in traffic crashes adn fatalities since the burst onto the market and into popular use almost 20 years ago. During the past decade mobile phone use in cars has exploded but the crash rate remains much the same. Personally, I think people are just noticing phones in cars more and making them a scapegoat for bad driving.
