Red light cameras may focus on speeders
Date: Wednesday, 27. June 2007
Police in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, want red light cameras to help in nabbing speeders. Police Chief Bob Wasylyshen sent a letter to the province's solicitor general this summer and volunteered to conduct a pilot project, citing a "pressing need" to use the technology to save lives. Chief Wasylyshen says it's too dangerous for police to attempt to stop speeders near intersections.
A study was done in September 2001 which found that some 8,586 vehicles went
through the green light at more than 86 kmh in a 70-kmh zone. As well, 88 vehicles
flew through at more than 121 kmh. Intersection crashes account for 68% of all
accidents in the city and about half of all fatalities. However, there are both
supporters and opponents of the idea. The Alberta wing of the Canadian Taxpayers
Federation thinks it's a "cash grab," while the Alberta Motor Association
says it would support the idea if the cameras are only used at intersections
which have problems. ![]()
