Canadian commercial drivers' medical cards accepted in USA

On December 30, 1998, Transport Canada and the U.S. Department of Transportation signed a letter of agreement on reciprocity of medical fitness requirements for drivers of commercial vehicles for both countries.

Negotiations between U.S. and Canadian officials hastened when an announcement from the Canadian Medical Protective Association, a group that provides legal advice and insurance to Canada's doctors, advised against doctors signing required U.S. medical forms.

On March 30, 1999, each country recognized the other's medical fitness test for commercial drivers, and Canadian drivers entering the U.S. will no longer need medical cards.

A Canadian commercial driver must meet the medical provisions of the National Safety Code, addressed by Regulation 340/94 in Ontario. In addition, in Ontario, commercial drivers must meet tough licensing standards with regular eye tests and physical examinations.

Further information can be obtained at the U.S. Department of Transportation site.End of Article

We are a US carrier with a driver that lives in Alberta. I was wondering if we are correct by saying that his medical expiration would be the same as the expiration on his drivers license???

Please let me know... thanks

How often are Canadian commercial drivers required to undergo medical examinations to maintain their licenses?

Canadian provinces have reciprocal agreements with states but you need to check the individual state you are from with the province you are going to in Canada.
